Fashion Industry and Global Inequality- Mariah Fuller

The film "The True Cost" reminded me of when journalist Adam Matthews was a guest earlier in the semester and he discussed the unsafe working conditions in India’s leather industry. This film centers on the fashion industry and how it makes so much profit from clothing but also comes at a high price for workers who make the clothing. It focuses on workers protesting in Cambodia and the factory fire in Bangladesh. The film makes a point to mention that globalization promises cheaper clothes for consumers and job opportunities for people in poorer countries to work themselves out of poverty, but it doesn’t. I highly recommend this film which can be watched on Netflix.

I really like your response Mariah, unfortunately I wasn’t there when guest Adam Matthews came in during the semester while he discussed, “The unsafe working conditions in India’s leather industry.” Regardless my final project intertwine with the films concept and Mr. Matthews discussion. Just as the film mentions, “Globalization promises cheaper clothes for consumers and job opportunities for people in poorer countries to work themselves out of poverty,” somewhat of the same concept goes into my project base on the understanding on the worldly philosophy of sweatshops etc. All-in-all, nicely put!

Thanks for recommending the film, I am looking forward to watching it. Because of all of the toxic chemicals in tanning, it is known to be the most deadliest industries, causing health issues, and unsafe working conditions for workers. I found an article discussing the unsafe working conditions in India and talks about how tannery workers exposed to a variety of potentially dangerous chemicals similar to what our guest speaker Adam Mathews, spoke about. It’s very saddening to see people live in such terrible conditions, in this article one of the workers lost their lives due to these detrimental work conditions, there is also a video clip along with this article.
