After reading chapter 1, I have trouble understanding how the Europeans decided that other nations (non- European) were not civilized and undeveloped to their standards. The Europeans took any means necessary to justify their definition of development, even if it meant violence. Throughout the chapter the common theme was self interest. During the colonial era Europeans went to countries and took over their resources, government, language, religion and even forced into labor for the sake of social engineering. This idea frustrates me for so many reasons. I can’t begin to understand how one group of people decide they are superior over another group of people and completely try to wipe out their self existence for personal gain. The European may have thought that it was a win win situation for all nations, but all actuality it was only a win for he Europeans. What are your thoughts?
